This is the Son of God - John 1:34

John the apostle wrote how John the Baptist baptized Jesus and said, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost”, and in chapter one and verse thirty-four of his book, John shared how John the Baptist bore, “record that this is the Son of God” where we read:

And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

The verse reads, “And I saw, ... John began with the words, “And I ...” which means “and I, John the Baptist” “saw” which means “observed, noticed, perceived and understood” as well as the following. John shared how John the Baptist acknowledged his personal observance of the following.

The verse continues, “... and bare record that this is the Son of God.” John added the words, “and bare record” which means “and conjure, implore and utter honorable testimony” “that this is the Son of God” or “that the One upon whom the Holy Spirit descended exists as the term used preeminently of Jesus Christ, as enjoying the supreme love of God, united to him in affectionate intimacy, privy to his saving councils and obedient to the Father's will in all his acts”. John shared how John the Baptist gave “witness” that Jesus was and is the “Son” of the Living “God”.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how John the Baptist was a “witness” to Jesus being the “Son” of Almighty “God”. John the Baptist observed the sign of the “Holy Spirit” “descending” upon Jesus and remaining upon Him, and he gave “testimony” that Jesus was the true “Son of God”. This was John the Baptist's mission, and as he gave “testimony” that Jesus was God's Son, the Christ and the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, he fulfilled what God required of him. God's love extends to every person regardless of their sinful past, and His invitation is to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” so they may be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words “bare record” like John the Baptist that Jesus really is “the Son of God”.

Next time John begins to tell what happened, “the next day after John stood”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
