The Temple of Jesus' Body - John 2:21

John the apostle shared how Jesus turned water into wine, and he wrote how Jesus, “went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days. And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting. And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables. And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things from here; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of your house has eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign show you unto us, seeing that you do these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and will you rear it up in three days?”, and in chapter two and verse twenty-one of his book, John shared how Jesus, “spoke of the temple of his body” where we read:

But he spoke of the temple of his body.

The verse reads, “But he spoke ... John began with the word, “but” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover” “he spoke” which means “Jesus affirmed, maintained, intended and mentioned” the following. John shared how Jesus was actually “speaking about” the following as He referred to the “temple”.

The verse continues, “... of the temple of his body.” John added the words, “of the temple” which means “pertaining to the sacred place” “of his body” or “pertaining to His physical body”. John shared how Jesus was referring to the “sacred place” of His own “physical body”.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus meant by raising the “temple” within three days after it was destroyed. Jesus' physical body or “temple” would be “destroyed” by evil men and buried. However, He would “raise back to life again” “three days later” which would provide forgiveness of sins and everlasting life to anyone who believes and trusts in Him. Jesus allowed His “body”, His “temple”, to be destroyed so He could raise it again “three days later” and all who believe and trust in Him shall be saved.

Next time John shares when Jesus, “was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
