Come and See - John 1:39

John the apostle wrote how John the Baptist baptized Jesus and said, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples. And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said unto them, What are you seeking? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where do you dwell?”, and in chapter one and verse thirty-nine of his book, John shares how Jesus answered the two disciples by saying, “Come and see” where we read:

He said unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt,

and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

The verse reads, “He said unto them, Come and see. John began with the words, “He said unto them which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to John the Baptist's two disciples”, “Come and see” which means “arise, come forth and follow and observe, perceive and know”. John shared how Jesus answered John the Baptist's two disciples question about where He “dwelt” by telling them to “follow Him and know”.

The verse goes on to say, “They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour” John continued with the words, “they came and saw” which means “the two disciples of John the Baptist arose, followed and came after Jesus and perceived, knew and observed” “where he dwelt” or “the place and location where Jesus abode, remained and tarried”, “and abode with him that day” or “and remained, sojourned and tarried alongside Jesus that sunrise to sunset”: “for it was about the tenth hour” which means “because the time of the day was around the tenth hour or four o'clock in the afternoon”. John shared how the two disciples of John the Baptist “followed” Jesus and “observed” where He lived, and because it was later in the afternoon, they continued to stay with Him.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus invited John the Baptist's two disciples to “arise and observe” where He was staying, and because it was late in the day, they continued to stay with Him. Can we imagine what this first meeting with Jesus was like? These two disciples were intrigued by what John the Baptist told them - “Behold, the Lamb of God”, and they investigated what He was like to a greater degree. The scriptures speak of Jesus throughout the Bible, and those who are wise will not only investigate who He is, but will also yield to Him when they discover He is the Messiah, Christ and Son of God. Those who believe and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life from God. Let all who read these words “follow” Jesus and “believe”.

Next time John shares how “one of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
