People Reviling Jesus While Wagging Their Heads - Matthew 27:39

Matthew the apostle wrote how there was “set up over” Jesus' head, “his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse thirty-nine of his book, Matthew wrote how, “they that passed by reviled him” where we read:

And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

The verse reads, “And they that passed by reviled him, ...Matthew began words, “and they that passed by” which means “and the people who proceeded past Jesus” “reviled him” or “spoke reproachfully to, calumniated and blasphemed Jesus”. Matthew shared how people began to “pass by” Jesus and “blaspheme Him” while He hung on the cross.

The verse goes on to say, “... wagging their heads,” Matthew continued with the word, “wagging” or “moving back and forth in a riotous and disturbing way”, “their heads” or “the people's heads”. Matthew shared how the people who passed by Jesus not only “reviled” Him, but they moved their heads back in forth in a combative, taunting and violent way while they blasphemed Him.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we can see how demonstrative these people were who passed by in front of Jesus. They tauntingly tossed their heads in erratic ways and “blasphemed” Jesus as He hung on the cross. If it were not enough to be “crucified” at the will of the people, they mocked and abused Jesus while He hung there. Jesus endured all these things because He loves people, and He came to die for their sins. They may obtain salvation from sin's penalty of death by “believing and trusting” in Him, and those who are wise will understand the “mocking” and “taunting” of the crowd was endured because Jesus desires that everyone live with Him forever and ever.

Next time Matthew wrote how the people passing by say, “you that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
