Matthew the apostle wrote how there was, “set up over” Jesus' head “his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse thirty-eight of his book, Matthew wrote how, “there were there two thieves crucified with him” where we read:
Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
The verse reads, “Then were there two thieves crucified with him, ...” Matthew began words, “then were there two thieves” which means “at that time and moment two robbers, plunderers, freebooters and brigands” “crucified” which means “palisade, driven down with stakes and hung on a cross” “with him” or “alongside Jesus”. Matthew shared how “two criminals” who were “robbers” were hung on crosses with Jesus.
The verse continues, “... one on the right hand, and another on the left.” Matthew added the words, “one on the right hand” or “one of the thieves was crucified on the right side of Jesus”, “and another on the left” or “and the other thief was crucified on the left side of Jesus”. Matthew shared how the “two thieves were crucified” on each side of Jesus.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we can use our imagination to see these “two thieves” on each side of Jesus. They were crucified for their crimes, and Jesus was crucified because the “spiritual leaders” in Jerusalem wanted Jesus dead. Jesus fulfilled prophesy concerning the Messiah again as we read, “he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (See Isaiah 53:12), and He fulfilled every detail because He wanted mankind to be “saved” from eternal separation from God. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus by forgiving their sins. All who are wise will see how Jesus took the death they deserved, and He was crucified between “two thieves” so He might be their “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Matthew wrote how, “they that passed by reviled him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
