The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he comes, he finds it swept and garnished. Then goes he, and takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice” where we read:
And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare you, and the paps which you have sucked.
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, ...” Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it happened and came into existence that”, “as he spoke these things” which means “while and during the time Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed His words about the unclean spirits”, “a certain woman of the company” or “a particular female human being within the multitude or crowd of people” “lifted up her voice” which means “raised and exalted her speech and sound of uttered words”. Luke shared while Jesus was “speaking” concerning the “unclean spirits”, a woman in the crowd shouted out the following words.
The verse continues, “... said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare you, and the paps which you have sucked.” Luke added the words, “said unto him” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “blessed” which means “oh how happy, fortunate and well off” “is the womb” or “exist the place where the fetus is conceived and nourished until birth” “that bare you” which means “who carried, sustained and supported Jesus”, “and the paps which you have sucked” or “and the breasts to which Jesus gave suckle”. Luke shared how the woman shouted an acknowledgment of how “fortunate” the woman was who “carried, nourished and fed” Jesus while He was a baby.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see the spontaneous outburst of this woman to the words of Jesus who shared how powerful He was over “unclean spirits”. This woman recognized not only how “blessed” Jesus was, but also how “blessed” His mother was as well. Jesus will respond to the woman in the next verse, but let us know she was correct in her assessment on the surface, and God wants all people to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will carefully consider how wonderful Jesus is and yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how, “blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
