The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he comes, he finds it swept and garnished”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus said the cast out spirit, “takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself” where we read:
Then goes he, and takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself;
and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
The verse reads, “Then goes he, and takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself;” Luke began with the words, “then goes he” or “at that time the unclean spirit departs and journeys”, “and takes to him” which means “and joins with himself” “seven other spirits” or “seven additional essences which are devoid of all or at least all grosser matter and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting” “more wicked than himself” which means “greater in bad nature, condition, wickedness, bad and disease than the original unclean spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “unclean spirit” returned to his original “location” and took “seven other” unclean spirits with him that were more “wicked and evil” than the original one.
The verse goes on to say, “and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.” Luke continued with the words, “and they enter in” or “and the original unclean spirit and the seven others make entrance and appear within the man”, “and dwell there” which means “and settle, inhabit and permanently reside within him”: “and the last state of that man” or “and the extreme, uttermost and last condition of the man” “is worse than the first” which means “is more evil, aggravated and physically, mentally and morally worse than the man was at the beginning”. Luke shared how the original “unclean spirit” as well as the seven other even worse evil spirits lived within the man and made his life “worse” than it was in his original state.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn that Jesus said the “clean and garnished” individual with nothing inside became an open “place” for the original “evil spirit” and “seven other more wicked” spirits to enter him. This caused the man to be in worse condition than he was originally. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and because Jesus knows what happens when a person does not yield their lives to Him, they become open to “unclean spirits” like this man. Let all who read these words submit their lives to Jesus who alone is able to fill the void within every person's life.
Next time Luke shares how, “a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
