The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute”, and in chapter eleven and verse fifty of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “ that the blood of all the prophets … may be required of this generation” where we read:
That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world,
may be required of this generation;
The verse reads, “That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, ...” Luke began with the words, “that the blood” or “so the bloodshed by violence and murder” “of all the prophets” which means “pertaining to each, every, the whole and everyone of the men who were moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what they have received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “which was shed” or “that was poured out, bestowed and distributed largely” “from the foundation of the world” which means “at the origin of the laying down of the deposition and conception belonging to the arrangement, constitution, order and government of the earth”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the “bloodshed” of every one of the “prophets” of God who were “killed by violence and murder” from the time the world began.
The verse goes on to say, “... may be required of this generation;” Luke continued with the words, “may be required” or “will be sought out, searched for, investigated, scrutinized and demanded” “of this generation” which means “pertaining to the current age, nation and multitude of men living at the same time”. Luke shared how Jesus said the current “multitude of people” would be “scrutinized” for their treatment of the “prophets and apostles” sent by God.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus said the people who “destroyed and persecuted” God's “prophets and apostles” would give an account for their treatment of them. God sends people to share His “gospel” or “good news” of salvation to mankind, and when those messengers are mistreated and maligned, He observes the perpetrators. God loves people, and He knows there is an “eternal life” that goes on and on forever. He sent His Son Jesus to be the Christ, “the Savior and Lord”, of the world, and even though many of His “prophets and apostles” have been “persecuted and killed” for His message, He continues to want people to yield their lives to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says what will happen, “from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
