The beloved physician Luke wrote how about Jesus, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles,
and some of them they shall slay and persecute. That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation”, and in chapter eleven and verse fifty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias … shall be required of this generation” where we read:
From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
The verse reads, “From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple:” Luke began with the words, “from the blood of Abel” or “at the point and time of the bloodshed and murder of Abel whose name means vanity who was the second son of Adam and Eve and was slain by his brother Cain” “unto the blood of Zacharias” which means “until the bloodshed and murder of Zacharias which means remembered of Jehovah and was the son of Barachias who was slain by the Jews between the altar and the temple”, “which perished” or “who died, was killed, rendered useless, abolished and put to an end” “between the altar” which means “betwixt and across the space separating the place for slaying and burning whole burnt offerings which stood in the court of the priests in the temple at Jerusalem” “and the temple” or “and the house of God or tabernacle”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the “murders of prophets” which occurred from the time of “Abel” to “Zacharias” who died as messengers of God.
The verse continues, “verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.” Luke added the word, “verily” or “truly, surely, assuredly and even so” “I say unto you” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the lawyers and religious leaders”, “it shall be required” or “the murders of all God's prophets and apostles will be sought out, searched for, investigated, scrutinized and demanded” “of this generation” which means “pertaining to the current age, nation and multitude of men living at the same time”. Luke shared how Jesus confirmed the “current age” would be “scrutinized” for the “murders” of God's “prophets and apostles”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how there will be a day of accounting for the “murdered” “prophets and apostles” of God. The commission of these “apostles and prophets” were to speak toward the coming of God's Son Jesus, the Messiah, and anyone who rejects their message will give an account of their rejection of God's message. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who receive Him as their “Savior and Lord” will have “received” the message of His “prophets and apostles”. Those who refuse to receive Jesus align themselves with the people who “killed, abolished and put away” the message of God's “prophets and apostles”, and woe be to them when they give an account.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “woe unto you lawyers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
