The Whole Body Full of Light - Luke 11:36

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness”, and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus declared what happens, “if your whole body therefore be full of light” where we read:

If your whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light,

as when the bright shining of a candle gives you light.

The verse reads, “If your whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, ...” Luke began with the words, “if your whole body therefore” or “whether all, the entire and complete physical body then, consequently and accordingly” “be full of light” which means “is completely composed and well lit with illumination, transparency and brightness”, “having no part dark” or “holding, owning and possessing not one certain lot, destiny or constituent part of a whole obscure, benighted or opaque”, “the whole shall be full of light” which means “the all, entire, complete and physical body will be completely composed and well lit with illumination, transparency and brightness”. Luke shared how Jesus said when a person's “complete physical body” is “well illuminated and transparent” without any trace of obscurity or benightedness, every part of the “body” will be illuminated, transparent and bright.

The verse goes on to say, “... as when the bright shining of a candle gives you light.” Luke continued with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “the bright shining of a candle” which means “the glare, gleam and illumination of a lamp” “gives you light” or “provides, bestows, furnishes and supplies the person illumination, transparency and brightness”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “gleam and illumination” of the “lamp” provides “light”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn the importance of having our “entire beings” filled with the “light” of God. When a person is filled with “God's light”, their life becomes a “bright shining” to others, and the illumination of the “light” within provides clarity to a person for direction and purpose. God wants everyone to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they believe in, trust in and rely upon Him, their lives shall become a “light” for themselves and to anyone they encounter.

Next time Luke shares concerning Jesus, “a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with Him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
