Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus asked the religious leaders, “How say they that Christ is David's son? And David himself said in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool”, and in chapter twenty and verse forty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus asks, “David therefore called him Lord, how is he then his son?” where we read:
David therefore called him Lord, how is he then his son?
The verse reads, “David therefore called him Lord, ...” Luke began with the words, “David therefore” or “David whose name means beloved and was the second King of Israel then, wherefore and on this account” “called him Lord” which means “saluted and bid Him as the One to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title of God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Jesus began to ask a question by referring to “David” who called his “offspring” his “Lord or master”.
The verse continues, “... how is he then his son?” Luke added the words, “how is he then” or “in what way is the Lord” “his son” which means “David's male offspring”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned in what way “David's Lord” could be “his male offspring”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the prophetic word of “David” the Psalmist who declared His “offspring” as his “Lord”. This would never be normally because no son would be the “Lord” of his father. Jesus' question was perplexing to the “religious leaders”, and it was certain to “baffle” them. We shall see how the “religious leaders” do not answer Him, and Jesus continued with His teaching. God's desire is to “save” people from their sins so they may live with Him forever, and when they yield their lives to Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their “sins” and receive everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus began to speak, “unto his disciples”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
