Rich Men Giving - Luke 21:1

Luke the beloved physician shared about Jesus, “in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts.Which devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury” where we read:

And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.

The verse reads,And he looked up, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he” or “and Jesus” “looked up” which means “raised His eyes to gain sight”. Luke shared how Jesus lifted His eyes to observe what was happening before Him.

The verse continues, “... and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.” Luke added the words, “and saw” or “and observed, noticed, perceived and discerned” “the rich men” which means “the wealthy, abounding in material resources, abounding and abundantly supplied male human beings” “casting their gifts” or “throwing, scattering or letting go of their presents, sacrifices and other money offered to God” “unto the treasury” which means “towards the repository of treasure especially of public treasure”. Luke shared how Jesus was watching the “wealthy” people letting go of their “presents and sacrifices” into the “public repository”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus paid attention to the “giving” practices of these “wealthy” people. The Psalmist David wrote, “the earth is the LORD'S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” (See Psalm 24:1), and everything a person owns has been given by Him. God said through the prophet Malachi, Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (See Malachi 3:10), and those who are wise will obey Him and give. Jesus will say more about this in our next verse, but let it suffice us to know God had a plan for the resources He gives to mankind, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus, they have aligned with His giving to people and may give their gifts to Him in return.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
