The Second of Seven Brothers Dying without Children - Luke 20:30

Luke the beloved physician how there came to Jesus, “certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders say, “the second took her to wife, and he died childless” where we read:

And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

The verse reads,And the second took her to wife, ...” Luke began with the words, “and the second” or “and the second of the seven brothers” “took her to wife” which means “possessed, acquired and married the first brother's widow”. Luke shared how the “Sadducees” added to their story by including how the “second” of the “seven brothers” married the widow of the first brother.

The verse continues, “... and he died childless.” Luke added the words, “and he died” or “and the second of the seven brothers breathed his last, expired and perished” “childless” which means “without any progeny or offspring”. Luke shared how the “Sadducees” told Jesus the “second brother” also “died” without having any “children”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the “second brother” marrying the first brother's widow. This “brother” also “died” without having any children by her. We might begin to wonder about this woman at this point, but regardless, this story added to the “Sadducees” story. Jesus will answer these “Sadducees” wisely when they finish their story with a question, but for now let it suffice us to know God's design for sending His Son Jesus into the world is to “save” everyone whether they are married and have children or not. When people give their hearts to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He forgives them of their sins and provides them with everlasting life. Let all who consider the “Sadducees” story carefully observe Jesus' answer to them and be assured there will be a “resurrection” for every person where everyone shall give an account unto God for what they have done with His Son Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders say, “the third took her; and in like manner also, and they left no children, and died”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
