Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that you be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draws near: go you not therefore after them. But when you shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what you shall answer”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse fifteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “I will give you a mouth and wisdom” where we read:
For I will give you a mouth and wisdom,
which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
The verse reads, “For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, ...” Luke began with the words, “For I will give you” or “because, since and on account that I, Jesus, will provide, grant, furnish and supplies His disciples” “a mouth” which means “with the thoughts which find verbal utterance through the physical mouth” “and wisdom” or “and broad full intelligence and the knowledge of very diverse matters”. Luke shared how Jesus said He would provide the “words and knowledge” of how to answer the authorities.
The verse goes on to say “... which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.” Luke continued with the words, “which all your adversaries” or “that each, every, the whole and everyone of Jesus' disciples' opposition, adverse, contrary and repugnant ones” “shall not be able to gainsay” which means “will be unable to speak against, repute and deny” “nor resist” or “no and not in any way to set themselves against, withstand or oppose”. Luke shared how Jesus said those who “oppose” His disciples would be unable to “repute, deny or withstand” what they say.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus said He would provide the “knowledge” and “words” to respond to His disciples' opposition. He said the authorities would not be able to be “refute” His disciples' words. God promises to be with His children regardless of the encounters they have with people who do not believe in Him. He gave His Son Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world. Those who are wise believe and trust in Him, and those who refuse and reject Him will be unable to “speak against or deny” the wisdom Jesus provides for them.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “your shall be betrayed by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks and friends”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
