The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, ...”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders, “could not find what they might do” where we read:
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
The verse reads, “And could not find what they might do:” Luke began with the words, “and could not find” or “and were unable and incapable of discovering, meet upon, recognize or detect”, “what they might do” which means “that which the religious leaders were able to produce, prepare or make ready”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” were unable to discover anything they could do to “destroy” Jesus.
The verse continues, “for all the people were very attentive to hear him.” Luke added the words, “for all the people” or “because, since and on account that each, every, the whole and everyone of the people who heard Jesus teach in the temple” “were very attentive” which means “were hanging on to and listening closely” “to hear him” or “to consider, understand, perceive and comprehend Jesus”. Luke shared how “all” the people listening to Jesus were very careful to pay attention to everything He had to say.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the “incapability” of the “chief priests, scribes and chief of the people” to discover a way to rid themselves of Jesus. The people who heard Him teach were “hanging on to” His every word, and because He was sharing with them from a “perfect” perspective, we can only imagine how wonderful it must have been to sit in His audience. There are people who desire to “stifle” Jesus' words today, and they would rather rid themselves of Him and His teaching than to accept and receive Him as their “Savior and Lord”. God loves every person, and His desire is for them to receive His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will be “attentive” to Jesus' words and never be involved with those who seek to silence Him.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share how, “the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
