Take Heed Lest that Day Take You Unaware - Luke 21:34

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees. When they now shoot forth, you see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise you, when you see these things come to pass, know you that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “And take heed to yourselves … so that day come upon you unawares” where we read:

And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting,

and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

The verse reads,And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, ...” Luke began with the words, “and take heed to yourselves or “and attend, give attendance and beware you, disciples of Jesus, to your own selves”, “lest at any time” which means “that, perhaps and whether or not and in no way” “your hearts” or “your, disciples of Jesus, souls or minds as they are the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes endeavors” “be overcharged” which means “exist as weighed down and burdened” “with surfeiting” or “with giddiness and headache caused by drinking wine to excess”. Luke shared how Jesus warned His disciples to beware because they were subject to being “giddy headed” from “drinking wine to excess”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” Luke continued with the words, “and drunkenness” or “and intoxication”, “and cares of this life” which means “and anxieties, solicitudes and distractions belonging to the affairs relating to the present existence”, “so that day come upon you” or “so the time of the signs be present, stand and assault you, disciples of Jesus” “unawares” which means “unforeseen, unexpected and suddenly”. Luke shared how Jesus warned His disciples not be “intoxicated” or “anxious with distractions” that pertain to daily life in the time of the “signs” on the earth and in the skies otherwise these “times” would “suddenly and unexpectedly” occur.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of specific behaviors Jesus said His disciples should avoid. “Drinking wine in excess, intoxication and anxiety that causes distractions” are not to be a part of the Christ follower's life. The reason given by Jesus was because they would be subject to be “unaware” of the “signs” that are coming on the earth and in the skies. God loves people so much He sent His Son Jesus to “save” them from their sins and the “imminent” troublesome times which are to come. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus and keep away from the behaviors that make people oblivious to the “signs”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “for as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
