The Master Known for Saying and Teaching Rightly - Luke 20:21

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-one of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders began to speak to Jesus, “saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly” where we read:

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly,

neither accept you the person of any, but teach the way of God truly:

The verse reads,And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they asked him” or “and the spies questioned and inquired of Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Master” or “teacher or instructor”, “we know that you say” which means “we spies understand and perceive that you, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim” “and teach” or “and hold didactic discourses, instill doctrine and impart instruction” “rightly” which means “in a strict, straight and correct manner”. Luke shared how the “spies” dispatched by the “religious leaders” began to question Jesus by referring to Him as “Master” and stating that they knew He “uttered and taught” things in a proper and correct manner.

The verse goes on to say, “... neither accept you the person of any, but teach the way of God truly:” Luke continued with the words, “neither accept you” or “no and not in any way take hold of, claim, procure and seize” “the person of any” which means “the countenance, look, appearance or outward circumstances and external condition of any particular person”, “but teach the way of God truly” or “moreover and hold didactic discourses, instill doctrine and impart instruction toward the journey, traveled road and course of conduct from the Godhead and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit in a true, factual and certain manner”. Luke shared how the “spies” added that Jesus did not “receive, claim and procure” just “any” person but gave “didactic teachings” concerning God's “way” in a truthful manner.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “spies” sent out by the “religious leaders” continued their building up and flattering Jesus with words concerning His “acceptance” of people and the words He used to “teach” God's way in a truthful manner. Jesus knew what these men were doing, and because He came to “save” people from their sins, He endured all this line of conversation and questioning. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their “sins” and receive “everlasting life” with God. Those who do not receive Him are like these “spies” who only “flatter” Jesus with their words so they may continue to deny Him.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders ask Jesus, “is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
