Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus began, “to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder”, and in chapter twenty and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how, “the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him” where we read:
And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him;
and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.
The verse reads, “And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him;” Luke began with the words, “and the chief priests” or “and the high and principal priests” “and the scribes” which means “”and the men who were learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings, an interpreters and teachers” “the same hour” or “that selfsame hour in time” “sought to lay hands on him” which means “desired, craved, required and demanded to put their physical hands upon Jesus and seize him”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” known as the “chief priests and the scribes” desired to “put their hands upon” Jesus to “seize” Him.
The verse goes on to say, “and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.” Luke continued with the words, “and they feared the people” or “and the religious leaders were afraid, struck with fear and seized with alarm by the crowd or multitude of male and female human beings”: “for they perceived” which means “because, since and on account that the religious leaders understood, knew and resolved” “that he had spoken” or “that Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “this parable” which means “the earthly story with a heavenly meaning” “against them” or “in opposition to the religious leaders”. Luke shared how the “chief priests and scribes” were afraid of the crowd because they “understood” that Jesus spoke the “parable” in opposition to them.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how upset these “religious leaders” were with Jesus because He “spoke His parable” against them. They, however, were “afraid” of how the “crowd” of people would respond if they “laid hands” upon Jesus. Jesus was sent into the world to “save” people from their sins, and when a person receives Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they become followers of Him and promoters of His Kingdom. Let all who read these words choose to whom their loyalties shall lie and find themselves aligned with believers in Jesus rather than the people to whom Jesus spoke this parable against.
Next time Luke shares how, “they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
