Jerusalem's Enemies - Luke 19:43

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus came near the city of Jerusalem, and, “he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “ the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you” where we read:

For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you,

and compass you round, and keep you in on every side,

The verse reads,For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, ...” Luke began with the words, “for the days shall come upon you” or “because, since and on account that the intervals between sunrises and sunsets or times will arrive and be present with Jerusalem”, “that your enemies” which means “that Jerusalem's foes and hating and opposing hostile ones” “shall cast a trench about you” or “will throw, surround and put a palisade or rampart around Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus said “days” were coming when the “foes and opponents” of Jerusalem would build a rampart around them.

The verse continues, ... and compass you round, and keep you in on every side,Luke added the words, “and compass you round” or “and encircle Jerusalem as to besiege them”, “and keep you in” which means “and hold and pressed Jerusalem” “on every side” or “from all sides and quarters”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “enemies” of Jerusalem would “surround” them and “press them in” from every quadrant and direction.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “enemies” of Jerusalem were going to come against them, surround them and hem them in because they refused to receive Jesus as their Messiah. This came to pass in history as Jerusalem was indeed surrounded by their enemy and destroyed. God knows the future of every city and person, and He warns people in advance of destruction. God wants to give people “peace” within their souls by having a relationship with His Son Jesus, and those who yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven, preserved, given peace and granted everlasting life from God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus said concerning Jerusalem, “they shall not leave in you one stone upon another”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
