Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse seventeen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake” where we read:
And you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
The verse reads, “And you shall be hated of all men ...” Luke began with the words, “and you shall be hated” or “and you, disciples of Jesus, will be detested” “of all men” which means “by each, every, the whole and everyone of the people both male and female”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples would be “detested” by everyone.
The verse goes on to say, “... for my name's sake.” Luke continued with the word, “for” or “by means, reason and grounds pertaining to” “my name's sake” which means “everything which the name covers including everything the thoughts or feelings of which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering of, my, Jesus', cause and reason”. Luke shared how Jesus said the reason His disciples would encounter “hatred” was because they were affiliated with Him and everything for which He stands.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the disciples of Jesus would also be “detested” by everyone because they were affiliated with Him. Jesus said, “this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” (See John 3:19-21) Jesus never promised that everyone would love those who love Him. If we think about it long enough, we realize they did not even love Jesus in that manner. God desires to have a relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus, however, this does not mean they will avoid being “hated”, however, not one thing they endure shall go unnoticed by Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “there shall not an hair of your head perish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
