Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when you shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “these be the days of vengeance” where we read:
For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
The verse reads, “For these be the days of vengeance, ...” Luke began with the words, “for these be the days” or “because, since and on account that the times in which Jesus spoke are the times” “of vengeance” which means “belonging to revenging and punishment”. Luke shared how Jesus declared the times of which He spoke to be the times of “revenge and punishment”.
The verse continues, “... that all things which are written may be fulfilled.” Luke added the words, “that all things” or “so each, every, the whole and everyone of the prophecies and sayings” “which are written” which means “that are delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “may be fulfilled” or “might be caused to abound, furnished and liberally supplied”. Luke shared how Jesus said the reason for the “days of vengeance” would be to “Fulfill” every one of the prophecies concerning these times.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus recognized the “days of vengeance” to be a “fulfillment” of the “written” word. God knows the future, and everything He proclaimed will happen. God loves people, and He warns them in advance of events that shall be upon the earth. Those who are wise will receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and trust Him with the “days of vengeance” that shall surely come.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “woe unto them that are with child … in those days”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
