Another Servant Sent and Beaten - Luke 20:11

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus began, “to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty”, and in chapter twenty and verse eleven of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells how the owner of the vineyard, “sent another servant: and they beat him also” where we read:

And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also,

and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

The verse reads,And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, ...” Luke began with the words, “And again” or “and another time” “he sent another servant” which means “the owner of the vineyard dispatched and dismissed one other man of servile condition, slave or bondman”: “and they beat him also” or “and the tillers of the field or vine dressers even so and indeed flayed, skinned, trashed and smote the owner's second servant”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “owner” of the “vineyard” sent a second “servant” to receive from his field, but the vine dressers “smote and thrashed” him as well.

The verse continues, “... and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.Luke added the words, “and entreated him shamefully” or “and dishonored, insulted and treated the servant with contempt”, “and sent him away empty” which means “and dispatched and dismissed the servant with nothing from the field”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “owner's second servant” was mistreated much in the same way as the first, and he came back to the owner with no fruit from the field as well.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how the owner of the vineyard's second attempt to receive “fruit” from his field availed him nothing. Though this servant was assigned to receive the “fruit from the vineyard” that was due to the owner, the “tillers of the field” “beat” him and “treated the servant with contempt”. God created the world, and the people within the world are to be “given” unto Him. They come into a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they are to “returned” unto God, all those who oppose giving them will have denied His Son Jesus and the only way to have everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells how the owner of the vineyard, “sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
