The beloved physician Luke wrote as Jesus, “taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, And spoke unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority do you these things? or who is he that gave you this authority? And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed you him not? But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things”, and in chapter twenty and verse nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus speaks about, “a certain man” who “planted a vineyard” where we read:
Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard,
and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
The verse reads, “Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, ...” Luke began with the words, “then began he to speak” or “at that time Jesus started to utter, declare, proclaim and tell” “to the people” which means “toward the crowd of human beings both male and female” “this parable” or “the following earthly story with a heavenly meaning”; “A certain man” which means “a particular male human being” “planted a vineyard” or “implanted and instilled within the ground a yard filled with planted with fruit from the vine”. Luke shared how Jesus started to tell another “earthly story” that has a “heavenly meaning” by employing the illustration of a “man” who “planted” a field filled with “vine fruit”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.” Luke continued with the words, “and let it forth” or “and gave it, let it out for hire and farmed it out” “to husbandmen” which means “to tillers of the soil or vine dressers”, “and went into a far country” or “and departed abroad or left to a foreign land or ” “for a long time” which means “for an ample, competent or sufficient and worthy amount of time”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “owner” of the “vineyard” lent it to “vine dressers” and went on a long journey.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another “parable” spoken by Jesus. This one concerned the “owner” of a “vineyard” who left it to “tillers of the land” or “vine dressers” and left on a trip to a “foreign land”. Jesus will say more about this “owner” and his “vineyard” in the next few verses, but for now let us be reminded that God is the “owner” of all the world. He sent His Son Jesus into the world so He might “save” people from their sins and grant them everlasting life with Him. The “world” in a sense, is like the “vineyard” that has been left to people who are to care for it. The “owner”, “God”, will come looking for “fruit” from His “field”, and those who are wise will not only align themselves under Him and His ways, but also bear fruit in His Kingdom.
Next time Luke share how Jesus tells how the owner of the vineyard, “sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
