Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when you shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring. Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws nigh” where we read:
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads;
for your redemption draws nigh.
The verse reads, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads;” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “these things” which means “the cataclysmic events occur on the earth and in the skies” “begin to come to pass” or “start and initiate happening and coming into existence”, “then look up” which means “at that time raise up and elevate your eyes”, “and lift up your heads” or “and hoist, elevate and poise your, Jesus' disciples' physical heads”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to “raise their eyes” and “lift” their “heads” when the “horrific events” begin to happen upon the earth and in the sky.
The verse continues, “for your redemption draws nigh. Luke added the words, “for your redemption” or “because, since and on account that your, Jesus' disciples', deliverance, ransom, riddance and salvation” “draws nigh” which means “comes near and approaches”. Luke shared how Jesus said the reason His disciples were to “raise their eyes” and “lift” their “heads” was because their “salvation and deliverance” was at hand.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus promised to “save” His followers when the troubles occur on the earth and in the sky. Though isolated events occur from time to time on the earth and in the sky, the troubles Jesus spoke of are in massive and great magnitude. This will be the time of “judgment” upon the earth against the people who refuse a relationship with God. God has provided an escape from these things through His Son Jesus, and those who put their faith and trust in Him may “raise their eyes” and “lift up” their “heads” when these things happen because it means their “salvation and deliverance” is very close. God loves people, and when they submit their lives to His Son Jesus, they may rely upon His promise to “deliver” them in this great time of worldly trouble.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus gives another parable concerning, “the fig tree, and all the trees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
