Luke the beloved physician how there came to Jesus, “certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Last of all the woman died also”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders ask, “in the resurrection whose wife of them is she?” where we read:
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
The verse reads, “Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she?” Luke began with the word, “therefore” or “then, wherefore, consequently and on this account” “in the resurrection” which means “at the rising of from the dead” “whose wife of them” or “which one of the seven brothers female spouse” “is she” which means “exists the woman who was married to all of them”? Luke shared how the “Sadducees” asked Jesus to which of the seven brothers would the woman be the “wife”.
The verse goes on to say, “for seven had her to wife.” Luke continued with the words, “for seven had her” or “because, since and on account that all seven brothers possessed the woman” “to wife” which means “as their female spouse”? Luke shared how the “Sadducees” reasoned that “each” of the “seven brothers” were married to the woman.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn the intent of the “Sadducees” with their story about the seven brothers and the one woman who was married and widowed to them all. Because they did not believe in the “resurrection”, the “Sadducees” thought they had presented Jesus with a dilemma. They shall receive their answer in the next verse, but for now let us consider the difference between life on earth and life in heaven. Life on earth is temporary, and life in Heaven is eternal. Jesus came to die for the sins of all mankind so they may live with Him forever in Heaven. Those who yield their lives to Jesus will be saved from the penalty of sin and death and receive forgiveness of their sins which allows them to be granted everlasting life with God. Those who do not receive Jesus will have the best of their existence in this world, and woe be to them who shall forever be without God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus answers, “the children of this world marry, and are given in marriage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
