Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that you be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draws near: go you not therefore after them. But when you shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse eleven of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “and great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven” where we read:
And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences;
and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
The verse reads, “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences;” Luke began with the words, “and great earthquakes” or “and large, massive, numerous abundant shakings, commotions and tempests of the earth” “shall be in divers places” which means “will exist in different and various locations, cities, villages and districts”, “and famines” or “and scarcity of harvest, dearth and hunger”, “and pestilences” which means “and pests, plagues and diseases”. Luke shared how Jesus said there would be massive and numerous “quakings of the earth” as well as “dearth” and “diseases” that would appear upon the earth.
The verse goes on to say, “and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.” Luke continues with the words, “and fearful sights” or “and that which strikes terror, fright and terrific portent” “and great signs” which means “and massive, large, numerous and abundant marks, tokens, unusual occurrences and event which transcend the common course of nature” “shall there be from heaven” or “will exist and come to pass apart and separate from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how Jesus said there would also appear “frightening events” and “abundant unusual occurrences” from “heaven” that will “transcend” the “common course of nature”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about what will happen upon the earth before the “end” comes. Jesus said there would be a large amount of “earthquakes, dearth, diseases, sights that cause fear and abundant unusual occurrences” from the heavenly region. God knows these things in advance, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to “save” people from their “sins” so they may live forever with Him. These events of which Jesus spoke are more and more seen in our world today, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him and stay as close to Him as possible when all these things continue.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
