Luke the beloved physician how there came to Jesus, “certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus continued, “they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world … neither marry, nor are given in marriage” where we read:
But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
The verse reads, “But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, ...” Luke began with the words, “but they which shall be accounted worthy” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the people who are judged, deemed and deserving” “to obtain that world” which means “to reach, attain and secure that forever and unbroken age or perpetuity of time and eternity”, “and the resurrection” or “and the rising up” “from the dead” which means “from the state of breathing one's last, being deceased, departed, lifeless and destitute of life” shall live according to Jesus' following words. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the people who are “judged as deserving” of the “Heavenly eternal age” as well as the “rising from being dead”.
The verse goes on to say, “... neither marry, nor are given in marriage:” Luke continued with the words, “neither marry” or “no and not in any way are wed”, “nor are given in marriage” which means “no and not in any way do are people granted to wed”. Luke shared how Jesus said people in the “eternal world” do not “marry” nor do they give their “daughters” to be “married”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus separated people who are “deserving” of “eternal life in Heaven” from those who are not. Romans chapter three and verse ten says, “for there is none righteous, no, not one”, and Romans chapter three and verse twenty-three says, “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. In other words, no one is worthy of Heaven on their own. Jesus came to give people access to Heaven by believing and trusting in Him for their “salvation”. Those who believe in Him will receive “everlasting life” with God, and according to Jesus, will not be “married” nor “given in marriage” there. Jesus will say more about this in our next verse but for now, let all who read these words understand there is a difference between temporary life on earth and eternal life in Heaven, and may all who comprehend this yield their lives to Jesus.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus continues, “neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
