Jesus Perceiving Craftiness - Luke 20:23

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly, neither accept you the person of any, but teach the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, why tempt you me?” where we read:

But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt you me?

The verse reads,But he perceived their craftiness, ...” Luke began with the words, “but he perceived” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus observed, understood, considered attentively and fixed his eyes or mind upon” “their craftiness” which means “the spies sent from the chief priests and scribes' cunning, specious or false wisdom, trickery or sophistry”, He asked them the following question. Luke shared how Jesus knew the “mind and intent” of these “spies” and asked them the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... and said unto them, Why tempt you me?” Luke continued with the words, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the spies”, “why tempt you me” which means “for what reason and cause do the spies attempt and endeavor to test and try Jesus”? Luke shared how Jesus asked the “spies” for what reason they attempted to “test and try” Him.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew exactly what these “spies” were attempting to do. Can we even imagine attempting to “trick and fool” the Son of the Living God? However, these men so hated Jesus they would do anything to rid themselves of Him. God knows ever person, and His desire is to “save” them from their sins so they live forever with Him. Those who are wise will not “question” Jesus with foolish intent, but will rather yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “show me a penny”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
