Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “in your patience possess you your souls” where we read:
In your patience possess you your souls.
The verse reads, “In your patience ...” Luke began with the words, “In your patience” or “within, your, the disciples of Jesus', steadfastness, constancy and endurance” they were to do the following. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciple to rely upon their “steadfastness and endurance” to do the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... possess you your souls.” Luke added the words, “possess you” or “disciples of Jesus acquire, procure and obtain” “your souls” which means “the disciples' seats of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions”. Luke shared how Jesus said by being “steadfast and constant” His disciples would “procure” their own “feelings, desires and affections”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus instructed His disciples to stay firm in their “steadfastness” and dependency upon Him. God's desire is to “keep and preserve” everyone who puts their faith and trust in His Son Jesus. Whether that is in this life or the one to come, God has promised “eternal or age abiding life” to everyone who will continue in the faith. God sent His Son Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of mankind, and those who yield their lives to Him will “gain” their own “souls” by being “steadfast, constant and enduring” as they relate to God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples what to do, “when you shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
