Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when you shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations” where we read:
And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations:
and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
The verse reads, “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations:” Luke began with the words, “and they shall fall” or “and the people of the region of Judaea will descend and be prostrated” “by the edge of the sword” which means “through the means of the front or sharp edge belonging to a large knife, small sword or curved sword”, “and shall be led away captive” or “and will be subjugated and brought under control”, “into all nations” which means “in to each, every, the whole and everyone of the multitudes of individuals of the same nature or genus”. Luke shared how Jesus declared how the people would be killed by the “sword” and captured by every “nation”.
The verse continues, “and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” Luke added the words, “and Jerusalem” or “and Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine” “shall be trodden down” which means “will be tread upon, trampled and crushed with the feet” “of the Gentiles” or “belonging to the pagans or foreign nations not worshiping the true God”, “until the times of the Gentiles” which means “till the due measure, opportune or seasonable times belonging to the pagans or foreign nations not worshiping the true God” “be fulfilled” or “be made filled up, furnished and liberally supplied”. Luke shared how Jesus declared how “Jerusalem” would be “trampled” by the “pagan and foreign nations” until the “opportune and seasonable” pertaining to the “Gentiles” would be accomplished.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about what will happen to the people of “Jerusalem” when the armies surround the city. Not only were the people to be killed by “swords”, but their city, “Jerusalem”, would be overcome by the “Gentile” nations until the due time they were completed. Even these “times” are working according to God's plan, and no one would be able to resist what He allows. The only rescue for those who would suffer these things is to “believe and trust” in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will understand the value of being in a relationship with God's Son and yield their lives to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
