The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when you shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “woe unto them that are with child … in those days” where we read:
But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!
for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.
The verse reads, “But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!” Luke began with the words, “But woe unto them” or “moreover alas as an expression of grief toward the people” “that are with child” which means “who are pregnant”, “and to them that give suck” or “and to the women who are nursing or giving the breast to suckle”, “in those days” which means “within the day's of vengeance”! Luke shared how Jesus pronounced great “woe” upon the women who are pregnant and nursing in “the days of vengeance”.
The verse goes on to say, “for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.” Luke continued with the words, “for there shall be great distress” or “because, since and on account that there will be huge and massive calamity and straits” “in the land” which means “within the country, territory and region”, “and wrath” or “and anger, temper, violent emotion and indignation” “upon this people” which means “on the people of Judaea”. Luke shared how Jesus said there would be massive “troubles and calamities” within the “region” and “anger and violent indignation” upon the people who lived there.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus pronounced “woe” upon “pregnant and nursing” women because of the “huge calamities” and “anger” that will come upon that “region”. This devastation was to be widespread and massive, and the women with the unborn and infant children would be greatly affected by these “days”. God's intention is to “save” people from these “times”, and through His Son Jesus His desire is to rescue them for all eternity. Those who consider these horrific things should cling to Jesus and rely upon Him for wisdom, direction and protection to guide them when perilous times appear.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
