If You Had Known - Luke 19:42

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus came near the city of Jerusalem, and, “he beheld the city, and wept over it”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “if you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! where we read:

Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace!

but now they are hid from your eyes.

The verse reads,Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto your peace! ” Luke began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “if you had known” which means “whether that the city of Jerusalem were aware, understood, discovered and discerned”, “even you” or “indeed and also you, Jerusalem”, “at least in this your day” which means “truly and indeed in this the city of Jerusalem's time”, “the things which belong” or “all the belongings and possessions that lie, exist and dwell” “unto your peace” which means “to the tranquility and calm of Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus expressed His “grief” over Jerusalem's lack of knowing the “calm and tranquility” that was due unto them during the time He was with them.

The verse goes on to say, but now they are hid from your eyes.Luke continued with the words, “but now” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at this present time” “they are hid” which means “the things which belong to Jerusalem's peace are concealed, unnoticed and kept secret” “from your eyes” or “from the physical and spiritual eyes and understanding of Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “things which belong unto” Jerusalem's “peace” were kept secret from them.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover Jesus' words toward the “city of Jerusalem”. He desired that they know the “peace”that was afforded to them, but because they refused Him, “peace” was “kept secret” from them. When people refuse to receive God's Son Jesus as the “Savior and Lord” of their lives, they are as those who have “secrets” and “peace” kept from them. The word of God is filled with scripture after scripture that shows Jesus to be the “Christ and Messiah” of God, and God is willing to forgive the sins of every person who believes and trusts in Jesus. Let all who read these words not be like those who could have “known peace” but now have “things” “hidden from their eyes”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
