How is Christ David's Son? - Luke 20:41

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus continued to speak to the Sadducees by saying, “Now that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, you have well said. And after that they did not ask him any question at all, and in chapter twenty and verse forty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “how say they that Christ is David's son?” where we read:

And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

The verse reads,And he said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked” “unto them” which refers to “the Sadducees and religious leaders who had questioned Him” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to ask the “religious leaders” the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... How say they that Christ is David's son?” Luke continued with the words, “how say they” or “in what way utter, declare and proclaim the religious leaders” “that Christ” which means “that the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God” “is David's son” or “exists as the offspring and progeny of David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel? Luke shared how Jesus questioned the “religious leaders” as to “how” or “in what way” could the “religious leaders of old” declare that the “Messiah” was “King David's” offspring.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus began to question the religious leaders. Though they stopped asking Him questions, He now had a question for them. The Old Testament declared the Messiah would be the “Son of David”, and God promised King David through Him would the Messiah be born. God kept His promise as Jesus came through the lineage of King David and is the Messiah and Christ of God. God's desire is for every person to believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they do, they shall receive “everlasting life” with Him. Jesus will say more about this in our next verse, but for now let all who read His words consider the fulfillment of God's prophetic words within His Savior Son Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus declares, “David himself said in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
