The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus came near the city of Jerusalem, and, “he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, and compass you round, and keep you in on every side,”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus said about Jerusalem, “they shall not leave in you one stone upon another” where we read:
And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation.
The verse reads, “And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; ...” Luke began with the words, “and shall lay you” or “and will throw and raze Jerusalem” “even with the ground” which means “to the level of the earth”, “and your children within you” or “and the offspring and progeny of Jerusalem also in the city”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “enemies” of Jerusalem would “raze” them to the ground and even the “offspring” of Jerusalem would be involved.
The verse continues, “... and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation.” Luke added the words, “and they shall not leave in you” or “and the enemies will in no way yield up, expire or neglect within Jerusalem”, “one stone upon another” which means “a single building stone one upon another one”; “because you knew not” or “since and on account that Jerusalem did not understand, discover or discern” “the time of your visitation” which means “the due measure, fixed and definite time of Jerusalem's act by which God looks into and searches out the ways, deeds and character of men in order to adjudge them their lot accordingly”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “enemies” of Jerusalem would not allow “one building stone” to be left upon another when they lay siege upon them, and the reason was because they were unaware of their opportunity for salvation through Him.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus prophesied what would happen to Jerusalem when their “enemies” lay siege upon them. When Jerusalem was overtaken by the Romans in 70 a.d., they burned the temple of God, and the gold within the temple began to melt over the building stones which were used in it's construction. This caused the “enemies” of Jerusalem to tumble every stone within the building in order to retrieve the gold. God's word is true, and because He knows in advance the troubles that are certain to come, He gives warnings unto people. This is why He sent His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be saved from future destruction. Let all who consider Jesus' words yield their lives to Him.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
