A Poor Widow Giving - Luke 21:2

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus “looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse two of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites” where we read:

And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.

The verse reads,And he saw also a certain poor widow ...” Luke began with the words, “and he saw also” or “and Jesus observed, noticed and perceived even so and indeed” “a certain poor widow” which means “a particular needy woman whose husband had died”. Luke shared how Jesus also noticed a needy woman whose husband had died.

The verse goes to to say, “... casting in thither two mites.” Luke continued with the words, “casting in thither” or “throwing, scattering and letting go into the repository or public treasure” “two mites” which means “two thin, small brass coins which were equivalent to the eight part of an “as” which was worth about 1/5 of a cent”. Luke shared how Jesus saw the “needy widow woman” let go into the treasury “two little coins” which were worth about one-fifth of a cent.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we notice quite a contrast between the giving of this “needy widow woman” and the giving of the “wealthy” men. Jesus noticed both of them, and though He will say more about this in our next verse, we learn that Jesus watches people who “give”. Both of these “gave” or “let go” of their money into the temple treasury, but we shall see how one gave in a manner that pleased the Lord. Because He “so loved the world” God “gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16) . Those who “give” in a manner that pleases God will “give” as He did, and oh what sacrificial “giving” that is indeed.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow has cast in more than they all”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
