The Lord Said unto My Lord - Luke 20:42

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus asked the religious leaders, “How say they that Christ is David's son?”, and in chapter twenty and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus declared, “David himself said in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand” where we read:

And David himself said in the book of Psalms,

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand,

The verse reads,And David himself said in the book of Psalms, ...” Luke began with the words, “and David himself” or “and David whose name means beloved and was the second King of Israel his own self” “said in the book of Psalms” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed within the written roll or scroll named Psalms which means a striking, twanging or pious songs ” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the way “King David himself” made the following declaration within the Old Testament book of “Psalms”.

The verse continues, “... The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand,” Luke added the words, “The LORD” or “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “said unto my Lord” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to my own One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “Sit you” or “you be seated, fixed and established” “on my right hand” which means “at the right hand place of honor and authority”. Luke shared how Jesus quoted the scripture found in Psalm 110:1 to referred to how God said to David's Lord for Him to be seated at His right hand position of honor and authority.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus relied upon the Old Testament prophesy spoken by King David of Israel to question the religious leaders concerning the Messiah. How was it possible for “the LORD” to say to David's “Lord” that He should sit at His right hand of honor and authority. This would seem very confusing. However, the idea was that God Himself would come to the earth in the form of Jesus (God incarnate), and be able to “die” for the sins of mankind in a human body. Jesus whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” did this so every person would have an opportunity to receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they see Jesus “at the right hand of God” (See Acts 2:34-35, Hebrews 1:13 and Acts 7:56), may they yield their life to Him in response to His extended love.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus continues with David's words, “Till I make your enemies your footstool”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
