Pharisees Wanting Jesus to Rebuke - Luke 19:39

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus' disciples brought a young donkey,to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was come near, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen. Saying, Blessed be the King that comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shared how “some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke your disciples” where we read:

And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke your disciples.

The verse reads,And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, ... Luke began with the words, “and some of the Pharisees” or “and certain ones of the men who belonged to the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life” “from among the multitude” which means “within and a part of the crowd, press or number of people gathered”, “said unto him” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”. Luke shared how there were “certain Pharisees” or “religious leaders” who were with the “crowd of people” that were giving Jesus praise and honor as He road into Jerusalem on a “young donkey”.

The verse continues, ... Master, rebuke your disciples.Luke added the word, “Master” or “teacher or instructor”, “rebuke your disciples” which means “chide, reprove, admonish, censure severely and charge sharply your, Jesus', students, pupils and attendants”. Luke shared how the “Pharisees” wanted Jesus to “reprove and censure severely” His “disciples” because of what they were doing and saying.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how the “Pharisees” were again offended by what Jesus' “disciples” did as He road into Jerusalem. They did not think Jesus was worthy of the “honor and praise” His disciples and the crowd were giving Him, and they wanted it to stop. Jesus will respond to them in our next verse, but for now let it be known that Jesus deserves all the praise, honor and glory that every person in the world could give Him. Jesus is the “Savior” of the world who came to die for the sins of mankind and provide forgiveness of sins and eternal life with God. Those who truly examine the life of Jesus will find Him worthy of all the honor and blessing people could give, and they shall join in the chorus, “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
