Jesus Casting People Out of the Temple - Luke 19:45

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus came near the city of Jerusalem, and, “he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, and compass you round, and keep you in on every side, And shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein” where we read:

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

The verse reads,And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he went into the temple” or “and Jesus arose and entered the sacred place located in Jerusalem”, “and began to cast out” which means “and made a beginning of throwing and driving out and expelling” “them that sold therein” or “the people who were bartering, trading and peddling within the temple”. Luke shared how Jesus “entered” the “sacred temple” within Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, ... and them that bought;Luke continued with the words, “and them” or “and the people” “that bought” which means “who were doing business and purchasing items within the temple”. Luke shared how Jesus also “threw out” the people who were “buying” items within the temple.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus “entered” the “temple in Jerusalem” and started to “throw” people out who were conducting business within it. God's “temple” was “sacred”, and these people were using it for merchandising. Jesus will say more about this in our next verse, however, for now let it be a reminder of how Jesus felt about the “sacred” place of worship. God uses His “temple” to bring together people to worship Him, and when they understand the importance of the “eternal” and “spiritual” nature of the “place of worship”, they shall allow it to be a place where people come to know Jesus and grow in their relationship with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “My house is the house of prayer: but you have made it a den of thieves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
