John the apostle wrote how Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in him no fault at all. But you have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will you therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber”, and in chapter nineteen and verse one of his book John shared how, “Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him” where we read:
Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
The verse reads, “Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, ...” John began with the words, “Then Pilate therefore” which means “at that time Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria” “took Jesus” or “lay hold of, claimed and procured the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” and did the following. John shared how “Pilate” lay hold of “Jesus” after the Jewish people asked for “Barabbas” and did the following with Him.
The verse continues, “... and scourged him.” John added the words, “and scourged” or “and beat and flogged” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. John shared how “Pilate” had “Jesus” beat and flogged.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn what “Pilate” did with “Jesus” immediately following the Jewish people's rejection of Him and wanted “Barabbas” to be “released” instead. God's plan of salvation for mankind was being fulfilled, and Jesus was to bear “stripes” so people could be healed (See Isaiah 53:5). Each act of physical suffering endured by “Jesus” was for the benefit of mankind. Those who believe and trust in “Jesus” shall be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words surrender to Jesus who alone suffered so they might be saved.
Next time John shares how, “the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
