John the apostle wrote, “Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, and said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and said unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that you may know that I find no fault in him”, and in chapter nineteen and verse five of his book John wrote, “then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns” where we read:
Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.
And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man!
The verse reads, “Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe.” John began with the words, “Then came Jesus forth” which means “at that time arose and appeared the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation in front of the Jewish leaders and people”, “wearing the crown of thorns” or “bearing upon His head the braided or weaved together a chaplet or wreath made with bramble bush which was a thorny plant”, “and the purple robe” which means “and the blueish red dyed garment, cloak, mantle or tunic”. John shared how “Jesus” was brought before the Jewish leaders and people after being “scourged”, and He was adorned with the “thorny crown” and the “purple robe” the Roman soldiers put upon Him.
The verse continues, “And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man!” John added the words, “And Pilate said unto them” or “and Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria uttered, declared and proclaimed to the Jewish leaders and people”, “Behold the man” which means “lo, look upon and consider the male human being”! John shared how “Pilate” instructed the Jewish leaders and people to “look upon and consider” Jesus.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how “Pilate” attempted to convince the Jewish leaders and people that Jesus had suffered enough. In this beaten and mocked state, Jesus looked weak and feeble, and the appeal to the Jewish leaders and people's compassion should have been convincing. However, this would not satisfy the hostile crowd, and we shall see what they tell “Pilate” in our next verse. Suffice it for now to understand that Jesus went through this torment and trouble to provide “salvation” from sins for every person who will believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will “Behold the man” and surrender their lives to the One who gave His life to be tortured on their behalf.
Next time John shares how the “chief priests … and officers saw” Jesus and “cried out”, “Crucify him, crucify him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
