A Cup of Water in Jesus' Name - Mark 9:41

Mark wrote how John who was Jesus' disciple said, “Master, we saw one casting out devils in your name, and he follows not us: and we forbade him, because he follows not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part”, and in chapter nine and verse forty-one of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name … he shall not lose his reward” where we read:

For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name,

because you belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

The verse reads, “For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, ... Mark began with the words, “For whosoever” which means “because, since and on account that whatever person whether male or female” “shall give you” or “will grant, bestow, furnish and supply to Jesus' disciples” “a cup of water to drink” which means “a drinking vessel of water to imbibe” “in my name” or “within the name which is used for everything the name covers including everything the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”. Mark shared how Jesus began to share what happens to the person who “supplies” a “drink of water” in His “name”.

The verse continues, “... because you belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Mark added the word, “because” which means “since and on account that” “you belong to Christ” or “the person is owned and possessed by the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God”, “verily” which means “truly and surely” “I say unto you” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims to His disciples”, “he shall not lose” which means “that person will in no way destroy, abolish and put to ruin” “his reward” or “that person's wages, hire, toils and endeavors”. Mark shared how Jesus said a person who belongs to Him will never “destroy or ruin” their “wages and hire” for their works.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus verified even a “cup of water” given in His name for someone to drink will not be forgotten when “rewards” are given. God wants people to serve in the name of His Son Jesus, and whatever “work” they do within the name of Jesus, He promises to “reward” them. Even the “smallest” efforts will not be forgotten, and those who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will enjoy a lifetime of service to Him whose “reward” shall never be “destroyed”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus said what would happen to, “whosoever shall offend one of these little ones”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
