You Know the Commandments - Mark 10:19

Mark wrote when Jesus, “he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God”, and in chapter ten and verse nineteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus told the man, “you know the commandments” where we read:

You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal,

Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.

The verse reads, “You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, ... Mark began with the words, “you know” which means “the man understood, perceived and discerned” “the commandments” or “the orders, charges, precepts and injunctions of God”, “do not commit adultery” which means “do not have unlawful intercourse with another man's wife or another woman's husband”, “do not kill” or “do not commit murder”, “do not steal” which means “do not commit a theft or take away something by stealth that does not belong to you”. Mark shared how Jesus referred the man to “God's commandments” including “committing adultery, murdering and theft”.

The verse goes on to say, ... Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor your father and mother. Mark continues with the words, “do not bear false witness” or “do not utter falsehoods in giving testimony, be an untrue testifier or offer falsehoods in evidence”, “Defraud not” which means “do not keep back by fraud, be destitute, deprive and despoil”, “Honor your father and mother” or “revere, venerate and fix value upon a person's male and female ancestor or progenitor”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to “God's commandments” concerning “false witnessing, defrauding and honoring parents”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the latter six of the “ten commandments” given to Moses by God. These “commandments” relate to people interacting with one another. The first four commandments – Have no other gods before me, you shall not make to yourselves any graven image, do not take the Lord's name in vain and remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy – speak to a person's relationship with God. We shall see how this “man” responds to Jesus' question, and let us remember that God the Father sent His Son Jesus to the earth to pay the price for man's violation of these “commands”. Those who are wise will believe and trust in Jesus Christ who alone is able not only to keep God the Father's commands, but also save people who have not kept them.

Next time Mark shares how the man, “answered and said unto him, Master, all these things have I observed from my youth” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
