Let Not Man Put Asunder - Mark 10:9

Mark wrote how, “the Pharisees came to” Jesus “and asked” Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife. And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh”, and in chapter ten and verse nine of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “what … God has joined together, let not man put asunder” where we read:

What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.

The verse reads, “What therefore God has joined together, ... Mark began with the words, “what therefore God” which means “consequently, accordingly and these things being so that which the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “has joined together” or “has fastened, yoked and conjoined”. Mark shared how Jesus began His declaration concerning what “God” “fastened together” in “marriage”.

The verse goes on to say, “... let not man put asunder. Mark continued with the words, “let not man” which means “permit and allow no person whether male or female to” “put asunder” or “depart, separate, divide or divorce”. Mark shared how Jesus said no one was “allowed or permitted” to “separate” or “divorce” what God “joined together”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see just how important and valuable God sees marriage to be. No one was to “separate” a married couple because God “joined” it “together. Because God loves people so much, He desires to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Many mistakes have been made in marriage because the person has not allow Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of their lives, and rather than Him directing their lives, they have directed their own. Emotions, feelings and what one “thinks” should always be measured by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit's leading. Marriage is serious business to God because it is the second most important decision a person makes in their lives. The first is where they will spend eternity – with Jesus or without Him, and the second concerns with whom a person will live their life. God desires to be “Lord” over every decision people make because He knows what is best for them. Those who are wise will carefully consider Jesus' words and seek Him with all their heart whether they are going to be married or are seeking to “escape” one.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus', “disciples asked him again of the same manner”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
