Mock Scourge Spit and Kill - Mark 10:34

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said people will, “mock, scourge, spit upon and kill” Him where we read:

And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him:

and the third day he shall rise again.

The verse reads, “And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: Mark began with the words, “and they shall mock him” which means “and the religious leaders and Gentiles will delude, deceive and trifle with Jesus”, “and shall scourge him” or “and will flog Jesus”, “and shall spit upon him” which means “and will spit saliva with their mouths upon Jesus”, “and shall kill him” or “and will destroy, allow to perish and inflict mortal death upon Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus said the religious leaders and Gentiles will “trifle, flog, spit and inflict mortal death” upon Him.

The verse continues, and the third day he shall rise again. Mark added the words, “and the third day which means “and the third sunrise to sunset after Jesus is killed” “he shall rise again” or “Jesus will arise, be risen and resurrected back to life again”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “third day” after He is put to death, He will ascend from the grave and be alive again.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see Jesus' prophesy concerning His own persecution and murder which was to be executed by the “religious leaders” and the Gentiles. This horrific prediction happened just as Jesus said because God desired to have a loving relationship with people. “Sin” separated people from God, and it still does, but when Jesus came to suffer and die for the “sins” of all mankind, believing and trusting in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will allow a person to receive “everlasting life” with God. Those who are wise will understand what Jesus did and yield their lives to Him who “suffered, died and was resurrected” for them.

Next time Mark shares how James and John, “come unto him, saying, Master, we would that you should do for us whatsoever we desire” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
