Asking Jesus about Divorce - Mark 10:10

Mark wrote how the Pharisees asked Jesus, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife. And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder”, and in chapter ten and verse ten of his book, Mark shared how Jesus', “disciples asked him again of the same manner” where we read:

And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

The verse reads, “And in the house his disciples asked him again ... Mark began with the words, “and in the house” which means “and within the house where Jesus and His disciples entered” “his disciples” or “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “asked him again” which means “questioned and inquired of Jesus further more and anew”. Mark shared how Jesus' “disciples” questioned Him “again” when they entered into the house near the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan.

The verse continues, “... of the same matter. Mark added the words, “of the same matter” which means “about the selfsame subject of putting away one's wife”. Mark shared how Jesus' “disciples” asked Him about His teaching concerning “putting away one's wife”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' doctrine was not completely clear to His “disciples”. Because they did not understand, they asked Jesus what He meant by what He said concerning “putting away” when they came into the house where they were lodging. God wants people to know what He thinks about “marriage” and “divorce”, and He explains His thinking through His Son Jesus' words. Those who are wise will pay attention to the “Creator's” ideas and align themselves with Jesus as they submit to the truth He declares.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, commits adultery against her”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
