Jesus Delivered into the Hands of Men - Mark 9:31

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “And they departed from there, and passed through Galilee;

and he would not that any man should know it, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-one of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said,“the Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him” where we read:

For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men,

and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

The verse reads, “For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, ... Mark began with the words, “for he taught” which means “because Jesus instructed and gave didactic discourses to” “his disciples” or “Jesus' pupils, students and attendants”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “The Son of man” which refers to “Jesus who is God's Son” “is delivered” or “is betrayed, committed and yielded up” “into the hands of men” which means “into the agency, punishing, determining and controlling of the destinies of men”. Mark shared how Jesus began to tell His “disciples” how He would be “betrayed” into other men's “hands”.

The verse continues, “... and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. Mark added the words, “and they shall kill him” which means “and the men who arrest Jesus will take His life or destroy and inflict mortal death upon Him”; “and after that he is killed” or “and subsequent to Jesus' infliction of mortal death”, “he shall rise” which means “Jesus will be resurrected and raised from the dead” “the third day” or “the third day after He dies”. Mark shared how Jesus told His disciples He would be “killed” by the men to whom He will be betrayed, but three days afterward He will “be resurrected” from the dead.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told His “disciples” what would happen to Him well in advance of the actual events. Though they did not understand what He meant, He still told them what would happen. God loves people, and He desires for them to know what He had in mind for their “salvation”. People “sin”, and “the wages of sin is death”. (See Romans 6:23) Jesus “died” on the cross for the sins of the world, and after three days He rose from the grave so people could be in a relationship with His Heavenly Father. Those who submit their lives to Him will be “saved” and receive “everlasting life” with God. Let all who read these words understand and believe.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus' disciples, “understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
