Who Should Be the Greatest? - Mark 9:34

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way?”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus' disciples, “held their peace: for … they had disputed … who should be the greatest” where we read:

But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves,

who should be the greatest.

The verse reads, “But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, ... Mark began with the words, “but they held their peace” which means “however, nevertheless, moreover and Jesus' disciples were silent”: “for by the way” or “because on the traveled road or pathway” “they had disputed” which means “Jesus' disciples had reckoned thoroughly, conversed, argued and discussed” “among themselves” or “with the disciples' own selves”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples kept quiet and did not answer Jesus because they were “discussing and arguing among themselves” concerning the following.

The verse goes on to say, “... who should be the greatest. Mark added the words, “who should be” which means “which one of Jesus' disciples was” “the greatest” or “the stronger, more elder and largest of all the disciples”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples were “disputing” about which one of them was the “greatest”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciple responded to His question about what they were “disputing” as they walked. Because they were arguing over who was the “greatest” among them, they kept silent. More than likely they were embarrassed by their conversation, and none of them wanted to tell Jesus what they were saying. God's ways are different than our ways, and because He honors “humility” and “hates pride”, He wanted His disciples to know the ways of being “humble” rather than “greater than anyone”. God is great, and His plan of “salvation” for mankind through His Son Jesus required that He “humble” Himself to become the “servant of all”. Those who understand this principle will not only have great admiration for Jesus but also yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “sat down, and called the twelve, and said … If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
