What Shall I Do to Inherit Eternal Life? - Mark 10:17

Mark wrote how, “they brought young children to” Jesus, “that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them”, and in chapter ten and verse seventeen of his book, Mark shared how a man asked Jesus, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?where we read:

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him,

and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

The verse reads, “And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, ... Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he was gone forth” or “Jesus was departed and proceeded” “into the way” which means “the traveled road”, “there came one running” or “there approached and appeared a person who was running”, “and kneeled to him” which means “and fell down on his knees in an act of imploring aid or expressing reverence and honor to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus departed from the place where He blessed the “little children” and was traveling on the road when a man came running to Him and fell to his knees in Jesus' presence.

The verse goes on to say , ... and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Mark continued with the words, “and asked him” which means “and questioned and inquired of Jesus”, “Good Master” or “Upright, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, excellent, distinguished and honorable teacher”, “what shall I do” which means “what thing or act can the man himself perform or produce” “that I may inherit” or “so the man himself might receive as an inheritance, obtain and be partaker of” “eternal life” which means “life that is without beginning and end which always has been and always will be”. Mark shared how the man who came running to Jesus called Him “Good Master” as he asked what he needed to “do” to receive the “inheritance” of “age abiding life”.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how this man was interested in obtaining “age abiding life”. This included not only “everlasting life”, but also the “life style” the man saw in Jesus. When a person gives their life to Jesus, they receive God's “eternal life” which includes not only living with Him forever, but also a “life-style” that is above the circumstances and situations that enter into that person's life. We shall learn more about this man in the next few verses, but suffice it for now to realize there is no greater life than the “eternal life” that is given by Jesus.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asked the man, “why do you call me good?” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
