Jesus Rebuking the Foul Spirit - Mark 9:25

Mark wrote how a man in a multitude said to Jesus, “Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit. And wheresoever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spake to your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it has cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if you can do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-five of his book, Mark shared how Jesus,“rebuked the foul spirit”” where we read:

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

The verse reads, “When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, ... Mark began with the words, “when Jesus” which means “and at the time the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “saw that the people” or “observed and noticed that the crowd of people” “came running together” which means “began to hasten upon one place”, “he rebuked the foul spirit” or “Jesus straightly charged and admonished sharply the unclean, morally lewd and demonic essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”, “saying unto him” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming to the foul spirit” the following. Mark shared how Jesus observed the crowd of people “hastening” toward the man and his son so He “sharply charged” the “evil spirit” within the boy.

The verse goes on to say, ... You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him. Mark continued with the words, “you dumb and deaf spirit” which means “you speechless, blunted and dull in hearing essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting ”, “I charge you” or “Jesus ordered, enjoined and commanded the spirit to” “come out of him” which means “to escape, be emitted, emanate and issue forth from the boy”, “and enter no more into him” or “and do not make entrance within or go into the boy no longer or hereafter”. Mark shared how Jesus commanded the “evil spirit” of “deafness and dumbness” to exit the boy's body and never “enter” into him again.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus demonstrated His protection over the people who were hurriedly gathering to where He was, and He showed His power over the “spirit” that was within the boy. Jesus loves people, and His desire is to be their provider, protector and “Savior”. This is the reason He came, and as He demonstrates over and over again how caring, loving and powerful God is, those who consider Jesus' life carefully will see how much He loves them as well. Jesus said, he that has seen me has seen the Father” (See John 14:9), and those who are wise will yield their lives to the one they have “seen”.

Next time Mark shares how, “the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
