The Chief Shall be Servant - Mark 10:44

Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “You know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister”, and in chapter ten and verse forty-four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “whosoever of you will be the chief, shall be servant” where we read:

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest (most chief), shall be servant of all.

The verse reads, “And whosoever of you will be the chiefest (most chief), ...” Mark began with the words, “And whosoever of you” which means “and whichever of Jesus' disciples” “will be the chief” or “desires and has in mind to be the first in rank and the best in influence and honor”. Mark shared how whichever of Jesus' disciples desired to be the “first in rank” among them would be the following.

The verse goes on to say, ... shall be servant of all. Mark added the words, “shall be servant” which means “will be the minister, slave, bondman and man of servile condition” “of all” or “of each, every, the whole and everyone of the other disciples”. Mark shared how Jesus said the disciple who desired to be the “greatest” will be the “bond-servant” of all the others.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' Kingdom is exactly opposite of the world's. Though climbing the ladder of success and excelling to the top of the pile is the way of most organizations, Jesus said His disciples would be the “greatest” when they “served” the most. God served mankind by sending His Son Jesus to the earth to pay the price for their “sins”, and now all who “believe and trust” in Him shall be “saved” and receive “everlasting life” with God. Those who are wise will understand Jesus is the “greatest” because He became a “servant” to everyone, and when a person follows His example, they shall be exalted in the Kingdom of God.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “for even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
